Too Sick for School

In the school environment, many communicable diseases are easily transmitted from one student to another. A healthy environment involves prevention, early recognition of illness, prompt diagnosis, and treatment. Students who are not feeling well have a difficult time concentrating and therefore do not benefit from the instruction they receive. Please do not send an ill student to school. We need your assistance in providing a safe and healthy environment for all students.

We work closely with the LaPorte County Health Department when there is any concern for communicable diseases. If your student is diagnosed with a communicable problem (strep throat, chicken pox, head lice, COVID-19, etc.) we request that you inform the school as soon as possible.

Students should be kept at home if they have the following:
  • Temperature of 100.4 degrees or over
  • Eye infections with discharge
  • Cough associated with fever or continuous unrelieved cough
  • Cold symptoms associated with other signs of illness
  • Communicable diseases
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Undiagnosed skin eruptions or rashes
We ask students to be on antibiotic treatment for 24 hours or fever-free for 24 hours without an analgesic (Tylenol, Motrin, ibuprofen) before returning to school.

Please contact your healthcare provider or the school nurse with questions about the above information. This information is designed as a guideline for South Central students and is not a substitute for advice from your healthcare provider.
