Notes from Mr. Miller
September is officially over and October is in our midst. There is a lot to celebrate at South Central and we are proud of our students and staff and everything we accomplish on a daily basis! Below are some updates over the last few weeks and looking forward to the future!
NEW Workshop: On October 18th, our 8th grade girls will be taking a trip to the AK Smith Career Center in Michigan City for the annual Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) workshop. Our students will learn about different career paths and options as they head into high school. This is always an awesome event for our 8th grade students!
JH / HS Band Concert: Come out and support our Band students on Wednesday, October 11th in the South Gym at 7:00pm for our first concert of the year! Mr. Scheck does a great job and we are always excited to see our students in the spotlight!
Quarter 1 Report Cards: The official end of our first quarter is October 13th. Report cards will be published in Harmony Family Access on Monday, October 23rd. Please continue to check your student's grade and communicate with teachers any questions you have.
Dual Credits at South Central: For the 2023-24 school year, we have an AMAZING 861 college credits being taken by our high school students. Thank you to all of our teachers who are putting in extra effort to create college-level classes to prepare our students for their next steps!
Student Driver Passes: Students who wish to drive to school should see Mr. Mills to ensure they have a parking tag and designated spot. Parking tags are $10 and students are expected to park in their assigned spots.
Senior Meetings: Mrs. Randall is continuing her Senior Meetings with our senior class next week. Parents will be emailed information from that meeting after they are completed.
PSAT Testing: All 8th - 11th graders will be taking the PSAT on October 25th. The PSAT test provides exposure for our students as they practice for the SAT, while having the chance to earn recognition and possible scholarships through their score. The PSAT will last the entire morning on this day.
PSAT Activities Day: 7th and 12th graders will have the opportunity during our PSAT Day on October 25th to participate in some outside of the classroom activities. 7th graders will be participating in SC's "Make A Difference Day", where they will be volunteering at local community partners to help with different items. More information on locations and students assignments to come! Our 12th grade students will have the option to conduct a college visit or job shadow for the entire day. Informational packets have been given to students and ALL 12th GRADERS should turn back in what they are participating in to Ms. Kosteba no later than October 11th.
Veterans Day Program: South Central is bringing back its Veteran's Day Program on November 10th! More information will be sent out in the coming weeks. We hope to include as many veterans and current members of the Armed Forces as possible!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the main office at 219-767-2266 or contact Mr. Miller at jmiller@scentral.k12.in.us. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,

To add to the accolades, Hope also reached the 3,000 career assist mark! One more week of regular season before Sectional play begins the week of October 9th.
Our JV Volleyball team also needs some recognition as they repeated as the JV PCC Tournament Champions! Great job, Satellites!
The Satellite Football team was in action on September 22 against Lake Station, coming away with a 61-8 victory! Leading the way for the Satellites was senior Aaron Hogan, who scored a school record eight touchdowns on the night! The Satellites hosted River Forest this past Friday, falling short in a great game. We honored our seniors on this day
Congratulations to senior Zak Kimmel on his Back to Back PCC Cross Country Championship win! The Satellites will next compete in the IHSAA Sectional at New Prairie on Saturday, October 14th, starting at 10:00 CST.
Classroom Spotlight
Mr. McCallum's Agriculture Classes and FFA
This week, Mr. Kyle McCallum's Agriculture classes and FFA program are our classroom spotlight! Mr. McCallum teaches a variety of Ag courses in our building and has created a robust and successful FFA program. In his 12 years as a teacher at South Central, Mr. McCallum has done a great job in creating opportunities for our students to learn about different topics related to agriculture and more, creating memories throughout!
At this moment, there are currently 100 members in our FFA Program. Mr. McCallum has led our FFA program to many successes over the years including different individual champions, team champions, and sending representatives to the National Convention.
During the school day, Mr. McCallum has taught multiple courses that are always highly sought after. These include Intro to Agriculture, Natural Resources, Animal Life Sciences, Principles of Agriculture, and Land/Turf Management. Many of these courses are dual credit courses through Ivy Tech that give our students the ability to earn college credit upon completion. Mr. McCallum provides opportunities for his students to learn through hands-on approaches and they can usually "see" the results of their hard work.
Mr. McCallum cites the variety of opportunities that we provide for our students at a school our size, and the supportive nature of our students, parents, administration, and community as his favorite part of working at South Central.
Mr. McCallum has created a long-lasting program with our FFA here at SC and we are so proud of the opportunities he exposes our students to!
